Magic-wavelength optical traps for Rydberg atoms
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose blue-detuned optical traps that are suitable for trapping of both ground-state and Rydberg excited atoms. The addition of a background compensation field or a suitable choice of the trap geometry provides a magic trapping condition for ground-state and Rydberg atoms at the trap center. Deviations from the magic condition at finite temperature are calculated. Designs that achieve less than 200-kHz differential trap shift between Cs ground states and 125s Rydberg states for 10 μK Cs atoms are presented. Consideration of the trapping potential and photoionization rates suggests that these traps will be useful for quantum-information experiments with atomic qubits.

Theory of magic optical traps for Zeeman-insensitive clock transitions in alkali-metal atoms
Precision measurements and quantum-information processing with cold atoms may benefit from trapping atoms with specially engineered, “magic” optical fields. At the magic trapping conditions, the relevant atomic properties remain immune to strong perturbations by the trapping fields. Here we develop a theoretical analysis of magic trapping for especially valuable Zeeman-insensitive clock transit...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional lattice of blue-detuned atom traps using a projected Gaussian beam array
We describe a blue-detuned optical lattice for atom trapping which is intrinsically two-dimensional, while providing three-dimensional atom localization. The lattice is insensitive to optical phase fluctuations since it does not depend on field interference between distinct optical beams. The array is created using an arrangement of weakly overlapping Gaussian beams that creates a two-dimension...
متن کاملEnergy shift and state mixing of Rydberg atoms in ponderomotive optical traps
We present a degenerate perturbation analysis in the spin–orbit coupled basis for Rydberg atoms in an optical trap. The perturbation matrix is found to be nearly the same for two states with the same total angular momentum j, and orbital angular momentum number l differing by 1, The same perturbation matrices result in the same state-mixing and energy shift. We also study the dependence of stat...
متن کاملDependence of Rydberg-atom optical lattices on the angular wave function.
We investigate the dependence of optical-lattice trapping potentials for Rydberg atoms on the angular portion of the atomic wave function. While ground-state atoms are pointlike in relation to an optical-lattice field, Rydberg-atom wave functions extend over a substantial fraction of the lattice period, which leads to a dependence of the lattice trapping potential on the angular portion of the ...
متن کاملRydberg spectroscopy in an optical lattice: blackbody thermometry for atomic clocks.
We show that optical spectroscopy of Rydberg states can provide accurate in situ thermometry at room temperature. Transitions from a metastable state to Rydberg states with principal quantum numbers of 25-30 have 200 times larger fractional frequency sensitivities to blackbody radiation than the strontium clock transition. We demonstrate that magic-wavelength lattices exist for both strontium a...
